Deirdre Hekking

Sculptor & artist
the Netherlands

'Ever since I can remember, horses are a big part of my life. I grew up in a house with artistic parents surrounded with many materials to use and explore. When they were younger they lived above the studio of the Dutch artist Pieter Starreveld and for my 16th birthday I received a bronze foal sculpture made by him. This was my first bronze and I thought it was a beautiful piece. The bronze sculptures are timeless. They feel so heavy and solid when you hold them, but at the same time so fragile.

When I’m working on a sculpture I want to give the horse expression and a soul. I want to capture their movements and body language. A foal that I lost early on in his life is a inspiration to me. This way he is still close to me and not forgotten. The foals are made in the same size so you can combine them. I’m still expanding my series with other foals and mares. So you can choose which one you like the most. They are beautiful on their own, but also as a pair.'
