Full Circle: James Way
A Tribute to His Life and Work
29 October–1 November 2026
Ruiterkamer, Living Horse Museum, Amsterdam
A special exhibition curated by Joyce Ter Horst for the Dutch Equine Art Fair 2026.
Overview
American artist James Way (1968–2014) created paintings in which horses move between reality and imagination. Beginning as an illustrator before turning to oil painting, he developed an unmistakable visual language of unexpected combinations and imagined worlds.
His work inspired many of the artists participating in the Dutch Equine Art Fair, both during his lifetime and after his death. Full Circle, the first exhibition of his work since 2014, places his paintings alongside the contemporary equine art he continues to influence.
A son shares his father’s story
Through reproductions of some of James’s best-known paintings, his son Lion Way shares the story of his father’s life and work. Lion will be present during the fair, offering visitors a personal insight into the artist behind the images.
My Role
As curator, I selected the works and developed the presentation in the Ruiterkamer, bringing together reproductions, biographical context and Lion’s personal account. The exhibition recognises James Way’s influence and introduces his work to new audiences.
