From Early Beginnings to an Exceptional Career

Embark on a captivating exploration of the life and artistic contributions of British illustrator Norman Thelwell at the Thelwell's Pony Parade exhibition. From humble beginnings to an enduring legacy, this exhibition showcases Thelwell's unique ability to capture the charm and wit of everyday life.

Inspired by his deep love for animals, particularly ponies, Thelwell's whimsical illustrations breathe life into their lovable quirks and endearing antics. As his talent flourished, he developed a distinctive style that defined his illustrious career. Thelwell's path led him to the realm of teaching, where he honed his skills while sharing his knowledge with aspiring artists. His experiences during the Second World War influenced his artistic discipline and attention to detail, which became evident in his iconic illustrative style.

A significant turning point arrived when Thelwell began collaborating with Punch magazine. Over the course of 25 years, his illustrations graced the pages, delighting readers with their humorous and relatable depictions of human behaviour. His endearing characters, such as Penelope and her mischievous pony Kipper, captured the hearts of audiences nationwide.

However, it was his portrayal of the Thelwell ponies that secured his enduring legacy. These lovable and occasionally mischievous ponies became iconic symbols of humour and equestrian adventures, resonating not only with equestrian enthusiasts but also with a broader audience.

Honouring Norman Thelwell's Legacy with

Elsbeth Bos, David Thelwell and curator Joyce Ter Horst
Two years ago, Elsbeth Bos, the proud owner of both De Hollandsche Manege and the Living Horse Museum, seized the opportunity to showcase Thelwell's remarkable artistry in Amsterdam. Collaborating closely with David Thelwell, the artist's son, we dedicated ourselves to crafting a truly immersive and genuine exhibition commemorating Thelwell's centenary

Curator Joyce Ter Horst: 'Being involved in curating and organising this exhibition during such a significant centenary year has been an incredible experience! Curating alongside David Thelwell has been an absolute honour, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Elsbeth Bos and Vincent Valk of the Living Horse Museum for giving me this opportunity. Their dedication and passion for equestrian art have been instrumental in bringing Thelwell's Pony Parade exhibition to life!'
