De Paardenkamp, Soest
Curator and organiser
This exhibition brought together twenty-six international artists across two locations at De Paardenkamp: Vosseveld and the historic Het Gagelgat Farm Museum.
Developed in collaboration with Stichting De Paardenkamp, the project introduced a curatorial approach centred on the horses as the starting point for artistic interpretation. This exhibition marked the beginning of an ongoing collaboration, developed over multiple years, in which each edition explores a new curatorial direction.
I curated and organised the exhibition, overseeing the selection of artists, the development of the work, and the presentation across both locations.
Curatorial role
My role focused on establishing a clear foundation for working with artists in this context.
This included:
-
Selecting international artists open to working from observation and direct engagement
-
Guiding the development of work in response to the horses and their individual presence
-
Structuring the exhibition across two distinct locations within De Paardenkamp
-
Introducing a narrative approach connecting artwork, subject and site
Curatorial perspective
Working with the horses of De Paardenkamp as a starting point requires more than representation. It asks for attention, time and a willingness to observe before defining the work.
The focus of this exhibition was to explore how artists translate what they see and experience into visual language.
This meant working with individual interpretations, while allowing a shared thread to emerge through the act of observation.
It also meant structuring the exhibition across Vosseveld and Het Gagelgat in a way that allowed visitors to move between locations, experiencing different layers of narrative and context.
Outcome
The exhibition was presented across two locations, combining contemporary artworks with the environment and history of De Paardenkamp.
It brought together a large group of international artists and established the foundation for an ongoing series of exhibitions, each building on the relationship between artist, horse and place.
